My Favorite Fall Elixir

If you’re looking to take a break from caffeine or just want a new drink that’s warm and soothing - I’ve got you covered.

This elixir is easy to make, comforting and good for both your gut and immune system!

Lemon

Lemons are packed with Vitamin C, a potent antioxidant that boosts your immune system. Given that 70% of your immune system resides in your gut, incorporating lemon juice into your diet is a smart way to support both gut and overall health.

Ginger

Ginger contains gingerol, a compound that fights inflammation—a common culprit behind gut problems. It's a gut-friendly powerhouse that aids in digestion, calms your stomach, and can even kick nausea to the curb.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Using apple cider vinegar about 15-20 minutes before a meal can help to stimulate stomach acid, digestive enzymes and bile to optimize digestion. Studies have shown that ACV before a meal higher in carbohydrates may help to lower your blood sugar response.

Honey

Raw local honey acts as a prebiotic for the gut, increasing beneficial strains of bacteria that help to keep the microbiome in balance. It also has numerous other health benefits including boosting the immune system and being a long time remedy for a sore throat and cough.

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice

  • 2 inch piece of fresh ginger root, sliced

  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar

  • 2-3 tsp raw local honey (see notes below)

  • 1.5 cups of filtered water, just off a boil

Instructions

  • Add lemon juice, ginger slices, apple cider vinegar, honey and hot (but not boiling) water to a mug.

Notes:

You can play around with the amounts until you find a desirable balance between acid and sweet.

I usually like to use 2 tsp of honey but when I have a sore throat or cough I use 3 tsp (3 tsp = 1 tbsp).
